Silicone Molds
Here’s a simple recipe to make silicone and cornstarch molds.
This DIY technique is popular for creating custom molds for crafting, such as for jewelry, small decorations, or resin casting.
Materials:
- 100% silicone caulk (typically clear or white)
- Cornstarch (enough to mix with the silicone)
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl or a plate, sprinkle some cornstarch and squeeze out a small amount of silicone caulk (around 2-3 tablespoons, or enough to mold your object).
- Add a generous amount of cornstarch over the silicone. Start with a 1:1 ratio, and add more cornstarch as needed to get a workable consistency.
- Mix the silicone and cornstarch together using your hands or a disposable stick. Add more cornstarch if the mixture feels too sticky. The goal is to get a dough-like consistency that you can mold without it sticking to everything.
- Once the silicone and cornstarch are well-mixed, roll the mixture into a ball or flatten it slightly, depending on the shape of your object.
- Press your object gently but firmly into the silicone mixture. Ensure that all details you want to capture are pressed into the silicone.
- Leave the object in the silicone for at least 1-2 hours to set. The silicone will start to harden as it cures.
- After the silicone has set, gently remove your object. The silicone mold should be flexible yet firm enough to hold the details.
- Allow the mold to cure fully for another 2/3 hours before using it. This will ensure it's fully hardened and ready for casting.
Tips:
- Mold Release: For very intricate shapes, you may want to coat the object lightly with a release agent (like cooking spray) to make it easier to remove.
- Storage: Store the mold in a dry, cool place, and it should last for multiple uses depending on the material you’re casting.
This simple silicone and cornstarch mold is durable and flexible, making it ideal for various small casting projects!
